Rao was born and brought up in Gurgaon, Haryana, India. He belongs to the Ahir-Yadav family so his birth name is Rajkumar Yadav. He completed his education from Blue Bells Model School, Gurgaon, and did graduation in Bachelor Of Arts from Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College, Delhi and went on to study acting at the Film and Television Institute of India and graduate from there in 2008.
He then moved to Mumbai and made his acting debut with the film “Love Sex Aur Dhokha” in 2010. Then in 2013, he appeared in the film, Kai Po Che!. He rose to stardom with his portrayal of ‘Shahid Azmi’ in the film “Shahid” (2013).
